Benina (Burroughs) Montes was born and raised on her family’s diversified farm, which included beef, dairy, and almond operations. Growing up amidst the vibrant life of the farm, she developed a deep connection with agriculture from an early age. This environment nurtured her passion for farming and set the stage for her future endeavors in the agricultural industry.
Benina attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly, SLO), where she pursued her interest in agriculture. She graduated in 2001 with a degree in Agricultural Business, equipping herself with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage and innovate within the agricultural sector.
After completing her education, Benina returned to the family farm to take on the role of managing the almond operation. Recognizing the potential for diversifying the farm’s practices, she initiated the transition of some almond orchards to organic farming.
As Benina delved deeper into organic farming and witnessed the positive changes it brought, her enthusiasm for nature’s processes grew. Inspired by these results, the family decided to transition the entire farm to organic practices. In 2015, their hard work and commitment paid off when the whole farm received organic certification.
Benina’s dedication to sustainable agriculture didn’t stop there. Motivated by the research of Ecdysis and the benefits of regenerative farming, she embraced the principles of regenerative agriculture. Over the past four years, she has been diligent in implementing practices that keep the soil covered, integrate livestock, and harness the power of microbes to enhance soil health and productivity.
In 2022, Burroughs Family Orchards achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first almond farm in the world to receive Regenerative Organic Certification. This recognition highlighted the farm’s commitment to regenerative farming practices. The following year, in 2023, all the almond orchards on the farm were certified, and in 2024 the farm added the Regenified Certification to their almonds, walnuts, and lamb products.
Benina’s journey in agriculture is deeply intertwined with her personal life and family heritage. Her commitment to regenerative farming is not only a professional endeavor but also a reflection of her values and dedication to preserving the environment for future generations.
